  1. Behind the Scenes of Sylvania: The Cursed County Cover

How to make a nightmare inviting? Legendary artist Alessandro Boer rose up to the challenge to illustrate the cover for Sylvania: The Cursed County for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Today, he shares his experience bringing the Cursed County to reality:

Working on the cover for the upcoming Sylvania book was a true honour. One of the things I have always appreciated most about collaborating with the Cubicle 7 development team is the openness and trust they give to their artists. That level of creative freedom is incredibly motivating, and it constantly pushes me to give my absolute best.

From the very beginning, I wanted this cover to capture the same sense of fear and fascination I used to feel while flipping through the old Warhammer Army Books, while still embracing the unique identity of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. ‘I will tell you for nothing — stay away from Sylvania. If you are fool enough to go, then you have to be prepared. Take guards, and a guide who knows the province. The roads are worse than anywhere civilised, so be prepared for slow going when the weather gets bad. The coaching inns are havens in that blighted land, but even there, things aren’t always quite right.

You don’t want to find out what the forest and fens hold in the darkness. You see strange ruins in the day and lights at night, but those who look to explore them do not always return. The main routes, water and land, are at least reasonably well travelled and the traders and merchants you meet are usually friendly, if wary. But even then…

Don’t laugh… but you cannot even trust the dead to stay dead — I have seen dead soldiers clamber from the murky waters of the Stir, board a barge, and tear a man to pieces, I swear by Sigmar.

I’ll say it again — stay away from Sylvania.’

There is a dread that every sailor of the Old World harbours deep in their heart: the sight of black sails emerging from heavy fog on the horizon. Those ebon sails herald the coming of the dark elves, and with them all the cruelty, treachery, and wicked intelligence they bring to bear upon those unfortunate enough to encounter them.
