Careers in Warhammer: The Old World Roleplaying Game

Art by David Astruga

Life in the Empire is hard, and becomes all the harder if you can’t find a way to gather together a few coins. From grubby Rat Catchers to proud Knights, a Character’s Career defines much more than just how they earn their bread. Warhammer: the Old World Roleplaying Game comes with dozens of Careers, covering every level of society, each with its own Talents, Skills, Status, and roleplaying tips. Let’s have a look at some of our favourites so far!

Knight-Exile

“...Though my time within the lands of the Lady has come to an end, my service to her has not. By my hand and her mercy, my honour shall be restored, even if it is to be my final quest in this life…” - The Bretonnian Exile’s Vow

As you can play a Bretonnian in Warhammer: the Old World Roleplaying Game we had to make sure Knight-Exile was a career option from the very start! Knight-Exiles are those who have failed to uphold the Code Chivalric, or otherwise been forced to choose banishment from their beloved homeland. The thought of leaving fair Bretonnia behind is horrifying to her Knights - few punishments could be worse.

You’ll be seeing this particular Knight-Exile in more detail in our Starter Set, but more on that in a future blog!

Dwarf Brewguard

“Limp along now, manling, and thank your gods it was me and not another of my kin that caught you, or you’d already be a head shorter.”

Brewguards are a staple of Imperial Dwarf communities throughout the Empire. Long ago, when Dwarfs first sought refuge amongst their neighbours, a need arose to protect Dwarf breweries and their produce from thirsty human thieves. As a result, some Dwarfs became adept at dealing with disagreements between the two allies. Known as Brewguards, they can be found across the Empire, guarding Dwarfen enterprises, and doing what they can to protect the alliance between Dawi and Sigmar’s heirs.

Brewguards are an interesting career: part bodyguard, part diplomat. Though they have lived alongside each other for years, many Imperial Dwarfs still find dealing with humans a frustrating affair. They lie, cheat, renege on deals, and insist on calling any old swill ‘beer.’ These are all acts which, if undertaken by a Dwarf, would bring shame on their entire clan and likely end in censure or exile. Dwarfs of the Brewguard are practised at dealing with humans. They are somewhat more tolerant of the follies of men, knowing when a shout or a boot to the rear is sufficient for a crime that, if it were committed by another Dwarf, would warrant sworn oaths, lasting grudges, and even bloodshed.

These are just two of the Careers available in Warhammer: the Old World Roleplaying Game! In our next blog, we’ll take a look at some features of the new ruleset.
