The Enemy Within Campaign - Why we game!
Within roleplaying circles, there are campaigns that have become legendary, whispers of which pass from group to group, are fervently discussed at conventions, and swirl about the net. Campaigns that you just ‘must play’ at some point.
Among them is the epic quest to save the Empire from terribly manipulative hidden foes which lies at the heart of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay’s The Enemy Within campaign.
The Enemy Within is justly famed for its rich details, carefully crafted villains, potential allies, and plot twists that keep Players constantly guessing what may happen next. The adventure of the Enemy Within spans five volumes, but each book was designed to stand alone, meaning that you can play only a portion of the overall campaign and still feel the journey was worth it – though there are narrative touches and grand themes that will only truly hit home for those that stick it through to the end! What’s more, each of the volumes has an optional companion book which adds even more details, extra plot points, additional adventures, and useful NPCs. Even if your party’s not quite ready for an ongoing quest, many folks pick up these companion books for their utility in any Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay campaign.
The five parts of the Enemy Within Campaign and their respective Companions are:
The Enemy in Shadows – The Characters are offered a unique opportunity to advance their status, which eventually leads them the trade town of Bögenhafen where sinister plots are afoot.
The Enemy in Shadows Companion – Find details on the political structure of the Empire and the potential hazards of travelling its roads, mutants and what makes them so and specifics on the Tzeentchian cult the Purple Hand and the powerful magic of the Changer of the Ways.
Death on the Reik – The Characters, having likely left Bögenhafen in a hurry, take on the life of Reik riverboat merchants, which seems idyllic at first, but eventually leads them to a truly horrible castle.
Death on the Reik Companion– Travel and trade along the mighty rivers of the Empire, discover herbs and their uses, and encounter the Tzeentchian cult of the Red Crown - bitter rivals of the Purple Hand.
Power Behind the Throne– The great city of Middenheim calls the Characters to a grand Carnival, one that masks evil intentions and a plot most dire. This masterwork widely is considered by gamers and game designers to be one of the finest adventures ever written for any roleplaying game.
Power Behind the Throne Companion– Learn of the Cult of Ulric, ancient god of winter, wolves, and battle. Find many, many additional NPCs, and myriad ways to use them. And face the Jade Scepter, cult of Chaos God Slaanesh.
The Horned Rat – Middenheim is beset by hidden enemies and the Characters, having proven their worth, are asked to assist in rooting them out. Rumours of trouble in the Middle Mountains lead to revelations of an insane plot that could bring devastation if not stopped.
The Horned Rat Companion – Delve into the Skaven sourcebook for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay’s 4th edition and find greater details on the disturbing Skaven-worshiping Yellow Fang cult.
Empire in Ruins – The machinations of Chaos cults and Noble rivals may well lead to civil war for the Empire if the Characters cannot bring forth a relic out of legend – but the minions of the Architect of Fate are not easily denied.
Empire in Ruins Companion – Introduce multiple additional factions and explore the many ways events of the Enemy Within could potentially conclude, should a GM choose amidst many alternate plots.
As if all that wasn’t enough, there are also two city sourcebooks highlighting the key cities of the Empire where large portions of The Enemy Within Campaign takes place – Middenheim: City of the White Wolf, where the bulk of the events of Power Behind the Throne occur, as well as a large portion of The Horned Rat and Altdorf: Crown of the Empire where a small portion of Enemy in Shadows happens, but multiple key events of Empire in Ruins transpire.
We also released two lovely journals – one for Players and the other for GMs. While they were issued in concert with The Horned Rat, they can be used at any point in The Enemy Within.
Finally, to do The Enemy Within justice, we released five collectors’ volumes – each a pairing of one of the adventures with its companion book in a beautiful slipcase. Each of the collectors’ edition books has an alternate cover, along with appropriately coloured page edging and bookmarks. Each slipcase also contains a folder holding all the handouts connected to its adventure on cardstock.
At this point, perhaps you’re thinking “I should check what this The Enemy Within thing’s about”. Well we here at Cubicle 7 have an offer to help you out with that.
