“Delve into Hive Tertium to Retrieve a Lost Archeotech Artefact”
We're thrilled to reveal the cover art of the upcoming Darktide Extraction for
Warhammer 40,000 Wrath & Glory! Made by our good friend, Alessandro Boer.
We asked him to share his own thoughts on the cover:
"In the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium, there is only war"
This mantra accompanies me every time I think of my favorite universe and every time I have the opportunity to contribute to the expansion of the Warhammer 40,0000 universe into the realm of Roleplaying Games.
About two years ago, I created my first cover for the book Vow of Absolution, and since then, I’ve immersed myself deeper and deeper into this universe, continuously seeking its true essence—the one that makes your soul tremble—until the creation of this very piece. One of the most powerful experiences I have is being the bridge between Darktide, one of the most impactful video game adaptations of Warhammer 40,0000, and its players. It allows them to immerse themselves in the characters' lives, feeling the weight of their existence suspended between Chaos and death. What greater honour could there be than basing character creation on the official concept art by Miguel Iglesias, one of the artists I admire most?
I am a veteran player who has fought through the battles of Vermintide and Darktide, Fatshark Games' masterpieces that bring the Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,0000 settings to life. Both titles excel at placing the player at the very heart of these worlds, making every decision and stepping into a constant struggle for survival, suspended between light and darkness.
When designing the cover, I wanted the players to see the "Rejects" not as invincible heroes, but as fragile individuals standing against the storm. With the invaluable support of the developers, we crafted a message that stands in stark contrast to the iconic image of the Space Marines. These "Rejects" are not warriors of glory—they are the last, fragile bastion against the overwhelming tide of Nurgle’s followers. Nurgle, the Chaos God of pestilence, and decay, sends his corrupting influence to consume everything in its path. These protagonists are not fighting for victory—they are fighting for survival, to defy a fate that has already condemned them.
Just like these Rejects, the players must embrace the fragility and uncertainty of their existence when they step into their shoes. Their survival will not be a triumph, but a defiance against the inevitable. The cover visually captures this struggle, symbolizing survival in a universe where death is always just around the corner. The players, like the rejects, will not be invincible. There are no gods here, only fragile souls standing against an unrelenting storm. True victory lies not in glory, but in surviving against all odds.
Transitioning from the Astartes to the "ordinary" humans (or their equivalents) was a bold challenge, for the Space Marines are embodiments of power and indestructibility—gods of war. In this case, however, the epic tone shifts.
In the 41st millennium, war is not just a constant—it is an all-consuming force that shapes, breaks, and redefines the souls of those who dare to fight in its name. In this age, there is no honour, no salvation, no escape. There is only war.”
