Broken Weave Dev Diary 6: The Warden

Welcome back to our ongoing series of developer diaries for Broken Weave, the post-apocalyptic tragic fantasy setting for 5th edition. Today, we continue our look at some of the character classes you will get to play as during your adventures in the Broken World the Warden.

Broken Weave comes to Kickstarter in early February, so don’t forget to head to the Kickstarter page and sign up to be notified when it launches!

As the name suggests, the Warden is the protector of a party — the person with the heaviest armour and best weapons a settlement can pull together. Unfortunately, since this is a post-apocalyptic tragic fantasy setting, the best a settlement can pull together might still be a patchwork collection or armour pieces and relic weapons, long past their prime.

“I assumed that metal armour and armour parts were hard to find in good shape in Broken Weave. So I imagined that the Warden may have found a way to force their armour with various materials, that’s why I experimented with Driftwood in these early designs.”

— Clara-Marie Morin, Broken Weave Artist

While these designs were fantastic, we felt that they missed the mark a bit for our image of the Warden. Their armour didn’t appear much heavier than the other classes, and the celtic inspirations were a bit too heavy this time round. So we took it back to the drawing board and really dug deep in trying to conjure the concept of a tragic knight in a broken world.

“These concepts were designed to be tragic figures with more broken and asymmetrical armour parts. I also wanted to give him a more ‘brutal’ look, as if he is closer to the wild, Broken Weave atmosphere.”

— Clara-Marie Morin, Broken Weave Artist

We were blown away with the new Warden. Here was a true Broken Weave character, welding cobbled together legacy equipment passed down through generations to protect what little remained of their people. So needless to say, we took this forward to the final design!

The final design incorporates everything that makes Broken Weave what it is. They even kept their driftwood horned helm, a nod to their earlier design and an imitation of the strange candle-horned emblem upon their battered shield. The Warden is now ready to take some hits to protect their home.
